ABOUT US

Est. 1874

An account of the early history of Mount Charity Baptist Church was passed down by word of mouth from one generation to another. The late Bro. G. W. Williams gave an account of our church history to Sis. Marva Coleman.

Mt. Charity was established in the year of 1874 with a few dedicated, spirit filled men and women with a vision. In this time members would gather under a brush arbor to give thanks to the Almighty God. They had no physical building, no piano, choir, lights, not even a pew to sit on. Just their hands clapping and shoes tapping in harmony to the beat of old spiritual hymns in praise to the true and living God.

One Sunday, a Caucasian family passed by and could see and hear those saints lifting their hands in praise under a tree. God touched the hearts of the Jenkins family and they deeded land to these early saints to construct a building to be used for worship.

1st Corinthians Chapter 13 talks about charity(love), how it suffers long, is kind, rejoices in the truth, bears all things, believe all things, and how charity never fails. As they construct this building, we believe that this must have been the motivational book in the Bible that assisted them in the name for our sanctuary, Mt. Charity Baptist Church.  This decision was made because the church was built on unity and love, a love for God and love for one another.  Under the leadership of Rev. Dunbar and Rev Joshua, Mt. Charity had its humble beginning and Rev. Joshua became the first pastor.
